Q&A: Flu Vaccine With Egg Allergy

August 19, 2021

Yes. An egg allergy is no longer considered a reason not to get vaccinated against the flu. Even if you have a severe egg allergy, it is recommended that you get the flu shot. This is supported by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Flu vaccines are manufactured with egg based technology containing ovalbumin, which is a protein in eggs. A great deal of research evaluated if this would be safe in patients who have an egg allergy. The evidence shows that even people with a severe egg allergy can safely get the flu vaccine and that having an allergic reaction is very unlikely.

The only contraindication or reason it is not recommended to get the flu vaccine is if you have had a severe allergic reaction after receiving the flu shot. Therefore, people who have had hives, trouble breathing, angioedema (swelling), lightheadedness, or vomiting from an egg allergy are still recommended to get the flu vaccine.

If you are still unsure if it is safe for you or a family member to receive the flu shot please don’t hesitate to come in and ask us more about this. We also offer in house flu shots for patients who are still uneasy or nervous about receiving the flu vaccine. Over the years, we have safely administered many flu shots to patients with an egg allergy. Call us for more information!
